Vietnamese is spoken by over 95 million people in Vietnam and by large diaspora communities in the US β€” the Vietnamese-American and Vietnamese-British communities are among the most established Southeast Asian diaspora groups. Vietnamese translation is in consistent demand for immigration, legal, medical, and community services across the US.

Translation AZ provides specialist Vietnamese translation by native-speaking translators with expertise in legal, medical, and government documentation. All translations follow the standard written Vietnamese used in formal documentation, produced under our ISO 17100 two-linguist review process.

Vietnamese Script: Chα»― Quα»‘c Ngα»― & Tonal System

Vietnamese uses the Latin alphabet adapted as Chα»― Quα»‘c Ngα»―, standardised in the 17th century by Portuguese missionaries and fully adopted as the national script in the 20th century. The script is phonemic but complex β€” Vietnamese is a tonal language with six tones in the Northern (Hanoi) dialect and five in the Southern (Ho Chi Minh City) dialect. Tones are marked by diacritical marks above or below vowels, and tone errors can change meaning entirely. Vietnamese also uses additional vowel diacritics (Γ’, Γͺ, Γ΄, Ζ°, Ζ‘) that do not appear in standard Latin keyboards. Our translators produce accurate Chα»― Quα»‘c Ngα»― with all diacritics correctly applied β€” we do not produce tone-stripped text for official documents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there significant differences between Northern and Southern Vietnamese?

Yes β€” pronunciation and some vocabulary differ, but standard written Vietnamese is used for all formal documents regardless of regional origin. Our translators produce Standard Vietnamese (based on Northern dialect) for all certified translations.

Can you translate older Vietnamese documents that may use classical or pre-reform script?

Documents from before the standardisation of Chα»― Quα»‘c Ngα»― may use Chα»― NΓ΄m (a classical script using Chinese-derived characters). Contact us with a sample β€” Chα»― NΓ΄m requires specialist expertise separate from modern Vietnamese.

Are your Vietnamese translations accepted for USCIS?

Yes. Our certified Vietnamese translations include all required USCIS elements.

How do you handle Vietnamese names in official documents?

Vietnamese names follow the order Family name β€” Middle name β€” Given name. We preserve this order in translation and note it for legal clarity, as the convention differs from Western naming order.
